This intriguing narrative of Europe in 1883 echoes the headlines of 2018 with its dramatic recounting of an explosive device attack and speculation about when and where the next attack will occur. The similarities between 19th century anarchists and modern-day militant Salafists are worth noting. Both contexts work well within the General Aggression Model (GAM), despite their significant contrasts. It explains, even potentially predicts, the occurrence of large-scale violence in both eras and appears to be a timeless model for examining violence from a grievance–ideation–action–retaliation standpoint.
